Inspired by a time in Shetland when crofting was the way of life, I aim to evoke an atmosphere of nostalgia. I tried to capture the hardship of the lives of the crofters by portraying the interior as a dark, smoky room, while using colour to make the painting aesthetically pleasing.
I painted from 1930's postcards of Shetland, and mirrored the composition from the postcard, building up washes of acrylic over oil pastels to create an interesting surface.
