The painting was part of a student group exhibition entitled Nocturnal Twist which I coordinated in Aberdeen's Limousine Bull in 2011. The city of Aberdeen was at the heart of this nocturnal theme and comprised a two-piece set with this one highlighting that although the city becomes a hive of activity there is a darker and seedier side to it, which is hidden among the back streets. I have taken various back streets in Aberdeen and overlaid and blended them to represent one street. This painting is much more sparsely detailed than it's antithesis and sister painting. The colours are muted, the mood darker and the detail sketchier. The girls in the street are more ghostly in appearance, a shadow of their lives, and they almost blend into their background. This is symbolic of them being an exploited, unseen and unheard. They are less empowered than the girl in Highlights.
